Before your restoration treatment begins, Dr. Horiyat will discuss with you all your options and helps you to choose the best restoration option for your particular case.
WHAT ARE INLAYS & ONLAYS?
Dental inlays and onlays are made of a solid and custom-formed filling materials and used to repair large defective fillings or teeth that have been damaged by trauma or decay. Porcelain onlays and inlays can be used to maintain the structural integrity of your natural teeth; they can increase a tooth’s strength by up to 75 percent.
Porcelain inlays and onlays are more conservative treatment than crowns because considerably less tooth structure is removed. An inlay is molded to fit into the grooves of your teeth; An onlay is used to fill a larger cavity that extend over the cusps of a tooth.
Metal-free ceramic inlays or onlays are extremely durable and resilient while resembling the enamel of your natural teeth.
TYPES OF FILLINGS:
There are two basic types of fillings: Direct Dental Fillings and Indirect Dental fillings.
if you present with a small to average sized cavity resulting from tooth decay, you would be a candidate for a direct filling. Direct filling techniques are also referred as chairside filling because they are placed the same day you attend Aria Dental. While most common filling materials used to be silver amalgam, today, Dr. Horiyat, your holistic and biological dentist, uses only the most biocompatible, metal-free, and BPA free direct filling, called composite resin filling or “white” fillings.
Indirect fillings required when tooth decay is extensive and there is not enough healthy tooth structure to hold a direct filling. In such cases, indirect restorations are fabricated from porcelain or zirconia in a dental lab or in dental office using CEREC. They are referred to as indirect restorations because they cannot be made directly to the tooth by packing or layering.
Indirect restorations include Inlays, onlays, or crowns. Inlays are cemented inside the tooth within the cusps of the tooth; onlays involve replacing one or two cusps of the tooth as well as the inner layer; dental crowns fully encase the entire visible portion of a tooth that lies at and above the gum line.
INLAY/ONLAY MATERIALS
An Inlay and onlay can be made of gold, silver, composite, or ceramic materials. As a certified holistic, biological, and integrative dentist, Dr. Horiyat understands the side-effect of toxic and harmful dental materials to human body, thus, she uses only metal-free and biocompatible porcelain or composite resin inlays and onlays. If her patients are sensitive to certain materials, she precisely reviews their biocompatibility test and uses only materials that are safe and compatible to their bodies.
ADVANTAGES OF PORCELAIN INLAY AND ONLAY
- Strong and durable material
- Less prone to fracture than traditional fillings
- Blends in with the color of your natural teeth

WHAT DOES PLACING PORCELAIN
ONLAY OR INLAY ENTAIL?
These procedures can require one or two appointments. During your first appointment, Dr. Horiyat will take several very precise molds and digital impression, which will be used to fabricate your custom onlay or inlay.
The single tooth and adjacent gum are locally anesthetized with our painless and computer assisted anesthetic system (the WAND STA System) that has no syringe. This system discreetly numbs the single tooth or damaged tooth that Dr. Horiyat needs to work on instead of numbing your entire face. Therefore, there is no collateral numbness.
While your damaged tooth is numb, Dr. Horiyat will prepare the tooth, removing any decay and shaping the surface to facilitate fitting the new onlay or inlay. When these preparations are completed, the temporary restoration will be secured in place with temporary cement, and your bite will be checked digitally.
When all preparations are complete, Dr. Horiyat will precisely place your new onlay and inlay, carefully evaluate your bite and spacing, and secure your restoration with a “permanent” adhesive.

When selecting a dentist for your restoration, choose one who is experienced in placing the highest quality of holistic restoration, has a record of comfortable results without any redo, offers digital impression by iTero rather than tradition gooey impression materials, uses digital and painless injection system without numbing your entire face, and has knowledge about neuromuscular dentistry.
