What Is Dental Bonding & Enamel Reshaping?

Metal-Free Composite Dental Bonding is the application of a strong, natural-looking, and tooth-colored resin onto the surface of damaged teeth. Whether your teeth are stained, cracked, or slightly misaligned, aesthetic dental bonding can often be used to replace missing enamel and dentin and restore your beautiful smile. However, enamel reshaping also known as odontoplasty, enameloplasty, or slenderizing involves the shaving of a small amount of tooth enamel from the outermost layer of a misshapen tooth to effectively alter the length, shape, or surface contours of your teeth. Enamel reshaping not only improves aesthetics but also removes bumps and pits in the tooth’s enamel which could lead to major dental problems.

The Benefits of Metal-free Dental Bonding

If you’re looking for a quick yet effective fix for minor dental problems, consider the benefits of dental bonding:

The Best Candidate for Tooth Bonding & Reshaping

Metal-Free Bonding & Laser Contouring

Dental bonding and contouring can help with minor crooked teeth, cracks, chips, gaps, discoloration, tooth length, and other flaws. Tooth contouring and reshaping procedures are often relegated to those with minor restoration work. If you don’t have a fair amount of tooth enamel, you may need to consider an alternative procedure like dental veneers.

Disadvantages of Teeth Bonding

Although dental bonding material is somewhat stain-resistant, it doesn’t resist stains as well as porcelain restorations; teeth bonding can chip over time and isn’t as long-lasting as other restoration options, such as veneers or crowns.

In general, dental bonding is an excellent solution for making minor cosmetic changes. If you’re looking for a more dramatic transformation and have more complex or severe dental issues, bonding may not be enough. In these cases, Dr. Horiyat may discuss other customized treatment options with you such as porcelain veneers or dental crowns.

What to Expect from a Tooth Bonding Procedure?

Dental bonding and contouring will be typically done in one visit at our office in Orange County, CA. The process starts by preparing the tooth while removing the damaged portion of the tooth and cleaning the teeth and gum area. Then the composite resin will be applied in multiple layers to the needed areas. A special light will be applied in between the application of each layer to harden the composite resin. Once the bonding process is completed, the composite bonding and your natural teeth will be contoured and polished for an even result.
