What Is LANAP® Periodontal Surgery?
LANAP® (Laser-assisted new attachment procedure) is a remarkable and non-invasive laser procedure that is used as a painless, safe, and highly effective alternative to conventional gum disease surgery. LANAP=LAR is the only scientifically proven methodology that results in true periodontal regeneration, new bone growth, and gum tissue attachment. It is accomplished with PerioLase® MVP-7 digital pulsed Nd: YAG dental laser for the treatment of Periodontitis “Gum Disease”. The energy from the laser will reach bacteria quickly and eradicate them with up to 90 percent less inflammation of surrounding tissues.
LANAP® not only fights severe periodontitis by eradicating bacteria and regenerating natural cells in the patient’s tissue but also encourages bone development around existing teeth and decreases the risk of tooth loss.
When Is LANAP Laser Gum Surgery Necessary?
LANAP® laser gum surgery is necessary because it treats gum disease and prevents periodontitis. Gum disease occurs when the accumulation of plaque and tartar leads to bacterial infections on the gum tissue as well as the expansion of periodontal pockets between gums and teeth which ultimately leads to gum recession and loosening of teeth. Our body reacts to the early stage of infection by inducing an inflammatory response such as gum swollen, gum bleeding, and sensitivity; however, if left untreated it leads to severe periodontitis, dental abscesses, damage to the bone surrounding the teeth, bone loss, and loss of teeth. LANAP® surgery could help to restore optimal oral health and prevent the wore complications from progressing.
What Happens After the LANAP® Procedure?
Your gums will be sore for a few days after the LANAP® surgery. Dr. Horiyat may recommend some medications to minimize discomfort after the LANAP® procedure. Unlike traditional gum surgery, the LANAP® procedure is minimally invasive and does not require cutting or suturing of gum tissue, thus, the recovery will be faster. During the first 24-hour period after laser gum surgery, Dr. Horiyat may recommend staying on a liquid diet. For the following three to seven days after treatment, she only recommends a soft diet consisting of nutrient-dense foods. Dr. Horiyat always recommends staying away from form hot (temperature), spicy, crunchy, and chewy foods.
