What Is a Dental Crown?
A crown is a tooth-shaped “cap” cemented onto an existing tooth that usually covers the portion of your tooth above the gum line to restore its shape, size, and strength as well as improve its appearance. The crown becomes your tooth’s new outer surface.
A dental crown may be needed for a variety of reasons, including to protect a weak cracked, damaged, or decayed tooth, to restore and improve the shape and strength of a worn, chipped, or broken tooth, to save a natural tooth from extraction, and for cosmetic dental treatments such as full arch zirconia crowns, combination with porcelain veneers, restoring dental implants, or holding a dental bridge in place.
They are several different materials used for the creation of custom dental crowns, spanning from metals such as gold alloy and stainless steel to tooth-colored and biocompatible crowns comprised of metal-free porcelain or ceramic (zirconia).
Reasons for Dental Crowns?
If you have a tooth that has been significantly damaged or decayed, and you are considering the extraction of your tooth, Dr. Maryam Horiyat can evaluate it to preserve your natural tooth by a dental crown or porcelain inlay or onlay.
Porcelain Crowns are often indicated in the following cases:
- Decayed Teeth
- Broken & Fractured Teeth
- Large Fillings
- Root Canaled Teeth
- Cosmetic Enhancement
- Dental Implant Restorations
- Dental Bridge

Types of Crowns
Dental crowns can be made of Porcelain, Metal, Zirconium, Gold, or a combination of all.

Porcelain Fused to Metal (PFM)
Metal-Alloys Or Precious Gold
- Solid Porcelain Crowns or Ceramic Crowns, in which the entire thickness of the crown is porcelain.
- Zirconia Crown (Zirconium Dioxide) can be the entire thickness of the crown or can be used as a white precious substructure to porcelain.
- Porcelain Fused to Metal (PFM), which has an aesthetic ceramic material surface covering a metal-alloys substructure. Over time, the ceramic can separate from the metal, and a dark metal will become visible at the gum line.
- Metal-Alloys Crowns, in which the entire thickness of the crown is made of metal alloys.
What Type of Crown Is the Best?
Zirconia® Crown and Solid Porcelain Crowns such E-max® and Porcera® from Nobel Biocare are the most often preferred and offered as an option at Aria Dental by Dr. Horiyat because they mimic the translucency of natural teeth and are very strong. In addition, when your dentist takes an X-ray of your tooth for routine checkups, the structure of your tooth under a solid porcelain crown can be seen, but not under a porcelain fused to metal or metal crown. Solid porcelain crowns and Zirconia crowns are also more biocompatible with your oral tissues, which ultimately decreases gum irritation and gum recession compared to metal-based crowns.
Zirconia is not as translucent as porcelain or lithium disilicate (IPS) and therefore doe does not look as much like natural teeth. Thus, Dr. Horiyat in general recommends using zirconia for posterior teeth (molars) and IPS or metal-free porcelain crown for anterior (front) teeth.
