Ozone Therapy: A Minimally Invasive Technique for Simple or Surgical Oral Treatments
Modern dentistry is a marvel and leveraged throughout Aria Dental but with the case of ozone therapy, nature is used to provide the holistic & biological dentistry that makes a remarkable difference in oral and overall health.
As a certified holistic & biological dental office in Orange County, we proudly utilize different applications of ozone (O3) therapy during simple to surgical dental treatments to eliminate pharmaceutical drugs and their side effects.
What Is Ozone (O3) Therapy?
OPTIMIZE THE BIOME OF THE MOUTH
Some people have the misconception that Ozone is a pollutant and wonder if it is safe at all; they are often mistakenly referred to as a pollutant and think it is unhealthy. The opposite is true. Ozone (O3) is a naturally occurring and energized form of Oxygen; it is extremely safe, effective, and non-toxic to human cells but disintegrates the cell wall of pathogenic or “disease-causing” microorganisms which we call infection. These pathogenic microorganisms live together in what is called a biofilm. This biofilm supports a mixed type of infection made of bacteria, fungi, yeast, viruses, and parasites. The greatest holistic approach to ozone therapy is that kill “disease-causing” microorganisms without damaging any healthy tissues.

How Does Oxygen / Ozone Therapy Work?
Ozone has a chemical composition of O3; Oxygen has a chemical composition of O2. The extra oxygen in O3 makes ozone to be bioactive and a potent oxidant. The extra oxygen in O3 carries an electro-negative charge; all infection carries a positive charge, and healthy human cells are electro-neutral hence O3 is naturally attracted to the source of infection.
When ozone is introduced into a living system, it reacts with biomolecules (PUFA, antioxidants) present in the plasma; the reaction yields hydrogen peroxide (among other possible ROS) and liquid oxidation products (LOPS). The sudden rise in plasma concentration of hydrogen peroxide generates what is called a “transient oxidative burst”. The infective microorganisms have no natural defense against oxidative burst and as a result, they die.
The oxidative burst exhibits antimicrobial actions and induces a multitude of natural biochemical and physiologic reactions:
- It stimulates the cytokine system in the cell, which helps to clear out the infection.
- It activates mitochondria, which in turn supports the mechanism involved in clearing inflammation
It stimulates better blood flow, amplifies immune responses, and speeds up more rapid healing responses while decreasing the risk of post-surgical infections.

Ways Ozone Used
Toward Integrative Dental Approaches
Staying within the accepted standard of care, with proper application, oxygen/ozone can naturally enhance the outcomes of many dental treatments without the use of pharmaceutical drugs and associated side effects.
Different types of applications of ozone therapy can be used to kill microorganisms naturally and non-invasively without damaging healthy tissues.
- Ozonated Water
- Ozonated Oils
- Oxygen/Ozone Gas
Certified by The American Academy of Ozonotherapy (AAOt), Dr. Horiyat uses the most robust and the highest quality form of ozone gas by using an industrial size, commercial and medical graded ozone generator.
Ozone Therapy Used For...
Ozone therapy is used in dentistry in a variety of ways, including:
- Dental Cleaning & Preventive Care – We use ozone to harden tooth structure, reducing sensitivity in teeth that are week or worn down.
- Decay– Ozone gas will subsequently harden early cavities.
- Cosmetic Dentistry – Ozone makes teeth whitening faster and more effective
- Periodontal Disease – Ozone therapy kills the bacteria and removes waste products from the gum without damaging the healthy gum.
- Oral Surgery & Implant Placement – Ozone helps post-surgical recovery by combating bone infection, osteomyelitis, NICO lesions, and sterilizing the sockets.
- Root Canal Therapy – Ozone can clean infected root canals and smallest canals or tubules and sometimes reverse root canals.
- TMJ Pain – Ozone can help to manage the TMJ pain and heal the TMJ joints.
- Ear Insufflation – Ozone can promote healthier sinuses and upper airways
- Sensitivity – Ozone gas can harden the tooth structure, resulting in significantly less sensitivity
