BIOCOMPATIBLE CERAMIC IMPLANTS
Welcome to a New Era in Holistic Dental Implants & Cosmetic Dentistry
Biocompatible | Allergy-Free | Strong | Beautiful
Healthy and beautiful teeth contribute significantly to our quality of life and well-being; they are an essential part of our appearance, confidence, and daily eating habits. However, if they are missing from our smile for any reason, they need to be replaced with dental implants.
Choosing a dental implant should be an informed decision since it is not an off-the-shelf product to be easily returned or replaced. A dental implant material should be durable, aesthetic, biocompatible, non-toxic, and safe as it is going to be placed in your mouth for a long time. Moreover, an experienced implantologist and holistic dentist can advise you about implant suitability.
Zirconia, the Gold Standard of Dental Implants
Our biological and physiological dentist, Dr. Maryam Horiyat, says, “metal-free ceramic zirconia dental implant is like a one-time, long-term investment that usually pays high dividends by interacting favorably with the human body”, which means patients do not experience the situation of metal allergy, allergic reactions, or implant replacement defect or failure.
Our Computer-guided Dental Implant Surgery
At Aria Dental, we offer computer-guided surgery which is an innovative dental procedure that utilizes the most up-to-date digital technology to assist with dental implant surgery. With this technology, our implant specialist maps out the entire oral surgery procedure virtually using 3D images and a computerized model of our patient’s mouths to evaluate all aspects of the dental implant surgery before even placing them. With our in-house 3D Cone Beam Computerized Tomography (CBCT), we get high-resolution cross-sectional images with significantly less radiation than the conventional imaging system.

What Is Zirconia?
Zirconia was discovered in 1789 by the German chemist M.H. Klaproth but rediscovered only in the latest decades because of its unique properties. Zirconia is a very hard material and has excessive tensile strength. Because of its high bio-compatibility, it is used in medicine for hip replacement and dentistry for posts, crowns, implant abutments, and dental implants. Zirconia has a similar color to teeth and its bio-compatibility makes it an alternative and suitable material in implant dentistry especially when metal allergy, esthetics, an autoimmune condition, and being holistic one some of the concerns.
Holistic Zirconia Vs. Traditional Titanium Implants
Zirconia Dental Implants
Zirconia dental implants, also known as white implants or all ceramic implants are a crystalline form of zirconium and are well-known for their similarity to diamonds; they are made of special ceramic (Zirconium Oxide, ZrO2) that is used in the spaceships because of its high resistance to fracture and heat.
Ceramic zirconium oxide implants are biological and interact favorably with hard and soft tissues; moreover, they cause no allergic reactions, no inflammation, and no sensitivity to temperature. Therefore, it is considered safe and is approved by the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in dental implants. Zirconia implants have a tooth-color-like appearance and have aesthetic advantages over titanium implants. Good aesthetic results can also be obtained with implants when ceramic posts and crowns are used.

Is Zirconia Really Metal-free?
There is often some confusion amongst clinicians and patients regarding the difference between transitional metal zirconium and metal-free zirconia (zirconium oxide). Can you really call a zirconia implant “metal free” if it is derived from zirconium? YES.
Zirconia is a ceramic material manufactured from the oxidation of transitional metal zirconium, which is an irreversible chemical reaction that occurs where electrons move from the zirconium to the oxygen molecules. Even though, zirconia contains metallic atoms of zirconium but is not considered a metal due to its oxide structure (ZrO2). The addition of the oxide changes its composition, structure, behavior, and name. As a result, ceramic zirconia has completely different material properties compared to metal zirconium.

The Common Characteristic of Zirconia & Titanium Implants
- BIOCOMPATIBLE: Zirconia is an inert material with very low allergic potential.
- STRONG: The flexural strength of the Zirconia dental implant is close to 1200 MPa.
- OSSEOINTEGRATIVE: Zirconia implants have proven high level of osseointegration (meaning to provide optimum integration with the bone), confirmed in numerous studies in Germany and the United States, although not as high as Titanium.
The Advantages of Zirconia Vs. Titanium Dental Implants
When selecting dental implants, it is important to use the least reactive and least toxic material possible. It is also ideal to evaluate the strength, clinical success, manufacturer quality, and other implant material and design factors.
It is no longer necessary to implant surgical metallic titanium or any other metal to have fixed teeth and experience obstruction of energy flow through the body’s meridians; metal-free zirconia implants are the best solution for metallic surgical implant dentistry and a viable alternative for everyone with a missing tooth, especially for those who are not comfortable with or are not able to tolerate metal implants in their mouths.
Unlike conventional metallic titanium implants that could cause metal allergy, metal-free ceramic zirconia dental implants are free from risks of toxic metal allergy, hypersensitivity, corrosion, and inflammation. For instance, hypersensitivity induced by metallic titanium can lead to symptoms of implant rejection. Thus, the zirconia implants not only have superior soft-tissue response and biocompatibility but also pose no threat and cause no harm to your body.
The exact composition of Titanium alloys varies depending on the specific metal present in addition to titanium. Titanium implants can contain Iron, Manganese, Chromium, Tin, Vanadium, Molybdenum, Zirconium, Niobium, Zinc, Tungsten, Nickel, and many other metals. Ceramic zirconia implants contain only zirconium oxide which has no metal property and no metallic taste.
Unlike metal alloyed titanium implants, ceramic implants do contain any metal; thus, there is no corrosion. As a bio insert and biocompatible material, zirconia will never break down and migrate to other sites in the body or interfere with the maintenance of optimal health.
The flexural strength of the Zirconia dental implant, which is the amount of stress a material can take on when it’s flexing from applied pressure before it breaks is close to 1200 MPa (megapascals).
Zirconia implants have proven high level of osseointegration (meaning to provide optimum integration with the bone), confirmed in numerous studies in Germany and the United States, although not as high as Titanium.
Perhaps the most distinctive yet simple difference between titanium and ceramic implants is the color. The white color of zirconia substitutes the metallic appearance of titanium; it mimics the natural teeth, and it allows a more natural gum line. These properties are more apparent in patients with a thin or delicate soft tissue biotype or cases of soft tissue recession. Thus, no more dark line around the gum appears with metal-free zirconia implants as it appears in titanium implants, especially in the anterior region.
Research shows that ceramic implants and crowns have a low affinity for attracting and retaining plaques and calculus as well as less bacterial colonization and adhesion than titanium due to its non-polar structure, therefore, zirconia implants promote healthier gums and less gum recession or shrinkage.
The one-piece design of ceramic zirconia implants gained popularity because they had no prosthetic connection, thus, there is almost no likelihood of proliferating harmful bacteria growth. In titanium implants, the site where the prosthetic connects with the abutment and post is usually prone to harmful bacterial growth leading to implant failure.
With traditional titanium implants, the gum never grows onto the metal. This situation leaves the “immunological gateway” always open, which ultimately allows bacteria to invade more easily. In contrast, with metal-free zirconia implants, gum grows onto the ceramic and seals off the “immunological gateway.”
Ceramic implants which has an excellent biocompatibility, great biomechanical properties, and low affinity to plaque do not corrode when place into a wet environment like a mouth or when fluoride is added. Zirconia implants are about three times more durable than titanium implant as a result of the material’s natural flexural strength.
Metal-free Zirconia dental implants are designed so that they can possibly be placed immediately following a tooth extraction. This one-stage surgery reduces the amount of time it takes to place the implants to maximize our patients’ comfort. A less invasive surgery also results in shorter recovery time and less pain during in the days to follow the procedure.
With conventional titanium implants, micro gaps may be present after the metal implant has been surgically placed underneath the gum line. However, the zirconia implant has virtually no micro gap and creates a more seamless surgical placement because of its one-piece design.
Zirconia implant does not have a galvanic shock or battery effect on your body and brain wavelength (no electricity or heat). However, some studies have reported that titanium implant has a galvanic reaction that occurs after it comes in contact with saliva and fluoride.
Zirconia implants are manufactured by only few high reputable USA and Switzerland companies; titanium implants are manufactured by more than 100 companies in the world with different level of quality and standards.

All Ceramics Are Not Equal
When teeth are made from artificial biomaterials, it is essential to use ceramics of uncompromised quality in terms of appearance, mechanical strength, and functional safety. Oxide ceramic has been proven effective in all fields. Since the 1980s, when zirconia implants were proposed for use in dentistry due to success with hip implants, important progress has been made to assure zirconia’s safety and success. Zirconia ceramic implants have also been recommended as the preferred implant for tooth replacement by the holistic community.
Metal-free Zirconia Vs. Titanium
Choosing dental implant materials should be an informed decision since it is going to stay in your mouth for a long time and affect your oral and general health. It is very important to choose the least reactive and toxic material possible, like zirconia implants.
How Long Does a Zirconia Implant Last?
Dental implants are an excellent and modern choice for long-term tooth replacement and could last a lifetime. Dental implants’ lifespan depends on many important factors:
There are hundreds of different implant systems from different companies and countries. There are many low-quality dental implants in the market that not only last enough but also fail and cause more complications.
You need to choose a dentist who only places metal-free zirconia (ceramic) dental implants with the highest quality from the most reputable implant companies and a consistent proven track record of successful results.
At Aria Dental in Mission Viejo, we place FDA-approved implants from the most researched implant companies with the highest quality and the most advanced Implants. They include Nobel Biocare (USA), Zimmer Dental (USA), Straumann (SWZ), and Z-System.
Dental Implants provide long-term, indefinite sustainability when properly maintained with adequate brushing and flossing, assuming the patient receives regular dental check-ups.
Like natural teeth, dental implants are as sturdy and susceptible to decay and need to be maintained through regular home-care hygiene. In server cases of poor hygiene, dental implants could fail due to periodontal (gum) disease.
Feel free to contact Aria dental at (949) 364 – 9600 to learn more about dental implants and proper care techniques.
Tooth Location is also a factor in the expected longevity of the dental implant. The molar teeth (back teeth) can fail more quickly than implants in the front of the mouth due to receiving more strain from chewing.
Dental implants could last a lifetime, but health issues could cause an implant to fail prematurely. People who suffer from preexisting medical conditions such as diabetes and cancer have a higher risk of dental implant failure.
If you have questions about dental implants, our implant specialists can tell you more about dental implant options.

Can Any Dentist Place Zirconia Dental Implants?
Theoretically, maybe. However, if you are looking for a safer, non-allergic, and less-invasive option when it comes to your health, lifestyle, and well-being, you need to choose a non-traditional, holistic, biological, and integrative dental practice that can help you to choose the safest and most biocompatible for your mouth, body, mind, and environment.
Zirconia implants unlike titanium implants are one-piece; thus, their placement angle and position are extremely critical and must be very precise. Unlike two-piece titanium implants, errors in implant placement cannot be corrected with angled abutments (posts). Therefore, any surgeon involved with these implants should have a high level of prosthetic awareness.
At Aria Dental, the zirconia dental implants are placed by an American Board-Certified Periodontist or Implant Specialist who has more than 20 years of dental experience with 1000s of successful results. We are specializing in metal-free zirconia dental implants and the highest quality of porcelain dental crown restorations by our holistic and cosmetic dentist, Dr. Maryam Horiyat.
In our renowned holistic dental office, we focus on treating people for their dental concerns while preserving their overall health; we understand the philosophy that each tooth and its surrounding structures are connected to the various organs, tissues, and glands through the “Meridian Energy Chart.” Thus, we strictly comply with holistic, biological, physiological, and integrative protocols from IAOMT, IABDM, IAOC, HDA, and AAOT.
These holistic protocols help us not only to offer the painless, less invasive, and the best biological ozonated tooth extractions, and plasma-rich growth factor (PRGF) while being sedated with one of our safe sedation options, but also provide natural, safe, non-toxic, metal-free, ultra-biocompatible, and conservative ceramic (zirconia) implants with optimal osseointegration. Thus, our autoimmune system will not recognize ceramic implants as toxic materials to fight against them.
At our hi-tech dental implant center, we utilize modern diagnostic tools and many of our virtual planning and computer-generated surgical guides toward our metal-free, non-toxic, and biocompatible zirconia dental implants to enhance precise and accurate diagnosis and treatment planning, improve the standard of patients’ care, provide more successful and predictable treatment outcomes, enhance the result of our patients’ experience.

Frequently Asked Questions?
Choosing dental implant materials should be an informed decision since it is going to stay in your mouth for a long time and affect your oral and general health. It is very important to choose the least reactive and toxic material possible, like zirconia implants.
In general, conventional dentists think that titanium implants do not cause any long-term side effects or complications, but titanium impurities may pose a risk of an allergic reaction, hypersensitivity, toxicity, inflammation of the bone, and bone loss due to its metallic properties.
According to the consensus conference (2006), 80% of patients with titanium implants suffered from gum inflammation within five years. This gum inflammation favors the development of heart disease since the bacteria travel via the gums to the heart.
If you experience one of the following unfortunate situations that no longer justify keeping your existing titanium implant, you may consider titanium implant removal and replacement with zirconia implants.
- Severe Peri-implantitis with poor prognosis
- Adverse neurological or skin allergy reaction
- Allergy to impurities in titanium alloys
- Implant, abutment fracture
- Aesthetic or functional concerns
- Intolerance of titanium
Any type of dental implant can fail to osseointegrate to your jawbone even though it is not a common condition.
At Aria Dental, we could save your failing implant with modern LAPIP Protocols for Peri-Implantitis, which is a minimally invasive and effective technique.
According to Millennium Dental Technologies Inc, The LAPIP protocol is the only patient-friendly solution for ailing implants. “Studies indicate 95% of the failing implant treated with LAPIP Protocols have reintegrated in the pocket and stabilized with bone growth of 3-8 threads.”
