In today’s dentistry, there are over 2,000 dental materials in use across 16,000 branded dental products. The use of different metals, chemicals, compounds, and products in dentistry can cause serious and severe immune system conditions in patients whose bodies react to these types of substances. Everyone interacts differently with dental materials because each person possesses distinctive biochemistry; our bodies are not one size fits all, meaning NOT every person’s body will react the same way to various dental materials. Thus, no single dental material is suited for every individual.

Dr. Maryam Horiyat, voted California Top Holistic Dentist, knows that how each material reacts within a patient’s body is paramount to maintaining optimal health, reducing adverse reactions, and ensuring the longevity of dental restorations.

With the holistic and biological approach, Dr. Horiyat recommends several dental material tests to ensure that the dental materials selected for her patients are biocompatible and bio-insert with their unique biochemistry.

What Are Biocompatible Materials?

Biocompatible materials are substances with qualities that enable them to exist within a living organism without negative reaction and harm; they are defined as natural or non-synthetic. Bio-insert materials are those that are non-reactive with bodily tissues. Ideally, any material placed in the human body should be both biocompatible and bio-insert.

If a material is not biocompatible, it causes two types of allergic reactions: Irritation and sensitization. An irritation reaction is immediately after a single exposure to any dose. On the other hand, sensitization reaction is that the toxic reaction is independent of dose. Therefore, the slightest exposure may cause a server or possibly lethal toxic reaction. A sensitization reaction is delayed after repeated or prolonged exposure which may not be localized. This delayed and non-localized nature of sensitization reaction may prevent from realizing in the source of a toxic reaction.

The Purpose & Benefits of Biocompatibility Testing

The purpose of biocompatibility testing prior to dental treatment is to select materials that pose the least amount of stress on the immune system and will form optimal integration with the body for the lifetime of the restoration. In other word, it is to minimize toxicity and immune reactivity.

Dr. Horiyat recommends biocompatible material testing to choose dental materials that keep her patients healthy by avoiding low-grade systemic inflammation, allergic reactions, gum inflammation, worsening of auto-immune conditions.

Who Should Get Tested?

Ideally, material testing is recommended for EVERYONE; it’s especially important for individuals with existing allergies or compromised and stressed immune systems.

Testing is especially recommended for patients who are or have been affected by:

How Materials Tests Are Conducted?

Material compatibility testing is done in several ways. Electro-Dermal Screenings (EDS) is a diagnostic method used in alternative medicine to gather information about your body and sensitivity to materials. EDS uses a device that can measure the skin’s electrical resistance and detect the energetic traces of toxins, and allergens; it is also used to determine what materials may put your body imbalance and cause a reaction and potential problems by detecting energy imbalance along the meridian (invisible lines of energy flow in traditional Chinese medicine).

What Do We Use to Be Ultra-biocompatible?

We proudly use technologies, techniques, materials, & protocols recommended by IAOMT, HDA, IABDM, AOBDM, and IAOCI which are Metal-Free, Natural, Safe, Non-Toxic, and Biocompatible.
